The Garden Porch is a 1894 ink by James McNeill Whistler, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a quiet garden scene. Two women stand on a porch. One faces the other, her back to us. The porch has a railing and a few steps. Trees and bushes fill the yard, drawn in quick, light lines. The artist used a rough, sketchy style. This was made as a quick study, not a finished drawing. The lines are loose and uneven, almost like a doodle. Want to see more like this? Check out lithography.
