About this work

This print shows a big group of people traveling together on foot and horseback. Some ride in fancy carriages while others walk beside them. In the background, a city and church spire appear under a cloudy sky. The people wear old-fashioned clothes, and one person on horseback holds a book. A dog runs near the horses, and a few kids play in the foreground. The title at the bottom says this is about Chaucer’s *Canterbury Pilgrims*, a famous story about travelers sharing tales. The artist carved this scene into a metal plate, which is why the lines look sharp and detailed. Check out Romanticism to see how artists used emotion and imagination in their work.
