About this work

You see a tall sailing ship, the Jane, cutting through calm blue water under a light sky. The hull is dark green, sails a creamy white, and the rigging is painted with careful lines. Bradford was part of Arctic expeditions before painting. That’s why the ice floes in the distance look so real. Next time you’re in Chicago, check out the Art Institute of Chicago.
