Mount Washington shows a rocky peak poking through low clouds. A lone figure in a red shirt stands on a ledge. The wind tugs at his coat as he looks across the valley. Homer painted this during a trip for Harper’s Weekly. The White Mountains weren’t wild anymore—hotels and trains had arrived. Yet his figure still finds quiet in the vast, empty space. Check out his later work at the Art Institute of Chicago.
