About this work

A woman stands barefoot in a doorway, holding a bag of wool. She’s dressed in a simple, striped shirt and a red headscarf, working with her hands. Behind her, a wooden door frames the scene, and a cluster of dried onions hangs on the wall. Outside, a black-and-white dog sniffs the ground near a pile of potatoes. Notice how the light falls across her face and the rough texture of the wool. The artist used shadows to give depth to the scene, almost like a stage. This style is called *chiaroscuro*—look it up to see how light and dark create drama in art.
