St John the Baptist is a 1621 oil by Bartolomé González y Serrano, a Early Baroque Italian work, depicting John the Baptist, held at Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest.
This painting shows a young man sitting with a lamb. He is shirtless, wearing a pink cloth draped around his waist and a brown cloth over his left shoulder. He holds a staff in his right hand, with a white banner wrapped around it that says "ECCE AGNUS DEI" in black letters. The background is black. The young man looks directly at the viewer with a serious expression. His dark hair is curly, and he has a thin face with high cheekbones. The lamb is white and fluffy, lying down next to him. The artist uses chiaroscuro to create contrast between light and dark areas of the painting. Look up the technique of chiaroscuro.
Bartolomé González y Serrano (1564–1627) was a Spanish Baroque painter specializing in portraits that represent a continuation of Renaissance court portrait types practiced by Alonso Sánchez Coello and especially by Juan Pantoja de la Cruz.
