Herd Crossing the Brook is a 1652 ink by Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows a group of people herding cattle across a shallow stream. The water is rough, and the animals are splashing through it. One person in a wide-brimmed hat guides the herd from behind, while another rides a horse on the right side, holding a stick. The artist used fine lines to show the movement of the water and the animals’ muscles. The scene looks busy but controlled, like a snapshot of daily life. Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem (1 October 1620 – 18 February 1683) was a highly esteemed and prolific Dutch Golden Age painter of pastoral landscapes, populated with mythological or biblical figures, but also of a number of allegories and genre pieces.
