The Nauwerk Family is a 1819 ink by Johan Christian Dahl, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a family of six in a simple room. A woman holds a baby while sitting at a table, where a man and child are eating. Two other adults stand nearby—one reading a book, the other leaning in. The drawing is loose and quick, with faint lines and shading. The paper looks old, with writing in the corners that might be notes or a title. The artist used only pen and ink, no color, to capture the scene. Next, check out cross-hatching to see how artists build shadows with lines.
