Ah! il est frais... mais t'nez donc garçon... is a 1846 ink by Honoré Daumier, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows four people at a small table in a cozy room. A man in the back is serving food while another man leans forward, reaching for a plate. Two others sit with their backs to us, eating quietly. The walls are plain, and a window lets in soft light. The artist used quick, sketchy lines to show the moment’s energy. Notice how the man serving looks almost like he’s in motion—Daumier often drew people in everyday, lively scenes. Next, check out lithography to see how this print was made.
Honoré-Victorin Daumier was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker, whose many works offer commentary on the social and political life in France, from the Revolution of 1830 to the fall of the Second French Empire in 1870.
