Nymph Astride a Satyr (Jeune fille a califourchon sur un satyre) is a 1763 ink by Jean Honoré Fragonard, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a woman riding a goat-like creature through a wild forest. The trees are thick and tangled, with vines climbing everywhere. The woman’s dress blows in the wind, and she holds onto the creature’s horns. The artist used fine lines to show movement and texture, especially in the hair and leaves. This style was common in etchings of the time. Next, check out etching to see how artists create detailed prints like this.
Jean-Honoré Fragonard was born on 5 April 1732 in Grasse, the son of a glover, and moved with his family to Paris in 1738.
