The Satyrs' Dance (Danse de satyres) is a 1763 ink by Jean Honoré Fragonard, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows two half-human, half-goat figures dancing in a wooded scene. One figure holds a staff, while the other leans on a tree, their bodies twisted in playful poses. The background is full of tangled vines and rough bark, giving the forest a wild, untamed look. The artist used sharp lines and shading to create a sense of movement and energy. Notice how the figures’ flowing robes and the swirling branches seem to blur together, making the scene feel alive. Next, look up etching to see how this technique works.
Jean-Honoré Fragonard was born on 5 April 1732 in Grasse, the son of a glover, and moved with his family to Paris in 1738.
