Italian Joust of Peace is a 1514 ink by German 16th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
Two armored knights on horseback clash lances in a jousting match. Their armor and horses gleam with gold trim and bright colors. One lance shatters against the other’s steel breastplate. This drawing shows how German artists blended Italian subjects with northern detail. The artist used fine lines and soft watercolor washes to bring the scene to life. You can still see the leadpoint underlayer beneath the ink. If you like this, check out works by Albrecht Dürer at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
A German artist from the late 1500s drew lively scenes of knights clashing in parades and mock battles.
