A Sick Chicken is a 1874 gouache by Winslow Homer, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
A woman in a long dress and white cap stands outside a simple house, holding a small bird. Chickens peck around her feet, and a few more roam the grass. Inside the doorway, a dark space shows a table with jars and a potted plant. The brushstrokes are loose, almost sketchy, with soft colors blending together. This style was common in the late 1800s for everyday scenes. Look up watercolor to see how artists use layers of transparent paint.
Winslow Homer (February 24, 1836 – September 29, 1910) was an American landscape painter and illustrator, best known for his marine subjects.
