The Doorway is a 1880 by James McNeill Whistler, a Impressionism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This painting shows a large arched doorway with a grid pattern above it. The doorway is framed by ornate carvings and has steps leading up to it. The walls on either side of the doorway are decorated with a diamond pattern. A figure is standing in the doorway, but it's hard to make out any details. The overall mood of the painting is one of mystery and intrigue. If you want to see more works that explore light and shadow, check out the technique of chiaroscuro.
