The Star of Kings: A Night Piece
1651
From the collection of Cleveland Museum of Art
The Star of Kings: A Night Piece is a 1651 by Rembrandt, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This print shows a dark, shadowy room with a lone star shining through a window. On the right, a figure sits in a chair, their face half-lit by a glowing starburst above them. The rest of the room stays mostly black, with only faint shapes visible. The star’s light is the only bright spot, making the figure’s face stand out. The artist used deep contrasts between light and dark to guide your eye. Look up chiaroscuro next to see how this effect works.
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (15 July 1606 – 4 October 1669), known mononymously as Rembrandt, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, printmaker, and draughtsman.
