Battle of Nude Men is a 1608 chalk by Peter Paul, Sir Rubens, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a chaotic fight between naked men. Some are standing, others are sprawled on the ground, grabbing at each other. A few weapons like a spear and a sword lie scattered near the bodies. The figures look twisted and dynamic, with lots of movement in their limbs. The drawing uses quick, sketchy lines to show action and emotion. The paper is uneven, with edges cut roughly and stitched together. Check out the technique: cross-hatching for more on how artists build texture with lines.
