The work's early provenance traces to John Quincy Adams, who inherited it in Quincy, Massachusetts. It descended to his son, Charles Francis Adams, in Boston, and subsequently to Charles Francis's son, Brooks Adams, also of Boston.

After Brooks Adams's death, it passed to his niece, Abigail Adams Homans (Mrs. Robert Homans), who gifted the painting to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., in 1954.
