The portrait of Francis Hopkinson by Thomas Sully was first recorded in 1834. The work descended through the sitter's family: from his daughter, Emily Hopkinson Scovel, to her daughter, Florence Scovel Shinn. By 1918, the painting had entered the collection of Thomas B. Clarke, who acquired it on 11 April of that year.
Clarke's estate later sold the work on 29 January 1936 via M. Knoedler & Co., New York, to The A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust, Pittsburgh. It was subsequently gifted to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in 1942 as part of the Andrew W. Mellon collection.
The work is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., specifically within the Andrew W. Mellon collection. A 1928 exhibition catalogue suggests the painting may have been in the collection of Charles Harris between 1921 and 1922, and the documented exhibition history notes its inclusion in a 1928 Clarke exhibition.
