About this work

This painting shows two men sitting on a cushioned platform, dressed in bright white robes with red and gold accents. One holds a hookah, while the other leans in as if listening. Behind them, a third man stands, also in colorful clothing. The scene is framed by a window opening to a green landscape with a winding path and a distant figure. The men’s outfits and the hookah suggest a moment of leisure or discussion. The painting’s detailed borders and soft colors give it a calm, almost dreamy feel. The story of this work

Overview

The painting is an opaque watercolor on paper from 1780, showing Raja Prakash Chand of Guler smoking a huqqa with Raja Sansar Chand on a terrace. Both figures are dressed in plain white robes and turbans, with attendants holding fans positioned behind them. The work was later part of Sir Ernest Debenham’s collection before being sold at Sotheby’s and acquired via Maggs on July 2, 1953.
