東海道五十三次 鞠子|Mariko is a 1838 ink by Utagawa Hiroshige, a Romanticism work, held at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This print shows a busy roadside stop with people and animals. A horse stands tied near a stone wall, while travelers rest on benches or sit at tables under a simple roof. Some wear straw hats, others carry bundles. A few are eating or chatting, and one person leans against a post. Outside, trees and a fence line the path, giving shade to the scene. The artist packed lots of small details—like the way the travelers’ clothes wrinkle or the signs hanging in the background. These tiny touches make the scene feel real and lively. Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川 広重) or Andō Hiroshige (安藤 広重), born Andō Tokutarō (安藤 徳太郎; 1797 – 12 October 1858), was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition.
