The Bright Side is a 1866 by Winslow Homer, a Impressionism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
Four men in dark uniforms sit on the ground, leaning against a barrel and tents. One has his hat pulled low, another rests his hand on his knee. Horses and wagons are tied up in the background under a pale sky. The colors are mostly browns and grays, with a few patches of green and white from the tents. Notice how the light hits their faces while the background stays shadowy. This makes them stand out against the duller scene. Look up chiaroscuro next to see how this lighting trick works.
Winslow Homer (February 24, 1836 – September 29, 1910) was an American landscape painter and illustrator, best known for his marine subjects.
