The figure — the rendering of the human body — is the oldest and most persistent subject in all of art, and for much of recorded history it was effectively synonymous with art itself. The earliest undisputed depiction of a human being, the palm-sized Venus of Hohle Fels, was carved from mammoth ivory roughly 40,000 years ago and recovered from a cave near Schelklingen in southern Germany. From these Paleolithic beginnings the body became the central vehicle through which cultures expressed belief, status, and identity: ancient Egyptian painting codified the figure into a rigid, legible canon of proportion, while Greek sculptors pursued the opposite ideal — a naturalism of anatomy, movement, and balance that established the body as Western art's enduring measure of beauty and meaning.

The Renaissance marks the tradition's high point, when artists fused direct observation with classical ideals of proportion. Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael produced figures of unprecedented anatomical precision and psychological depth, setting standards of gesture, expression, and monumental form that are still taught today. The Baroque intensified this inheritance: Caravaggio dramatized the body through stark, theatrical light and an unidealized realism, and the tradition carried on through the Rococo of painters such as Jean-Honoré Fragonard.

The word "figurative" itself is largely a twentieth-century coinage, gaining currency only after the rise of abstraction, against which it defined itself. As painters abandoned recognizable subjects, "figurative" came to name any art that retained a likeness to the visible world — most often the human form. Far from disappearing, the figure was radically reimagined: fractured by Pablo Picasso, attenuated to a sliver by Alberto Giacometti, and rendered with visceral force by the postwar School of London, above all Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud.

As a genre, figurative work ranges from the isolated nude or portrait to the figure embedded within landscape and genre scene, where human presence animates and gives scale to its surroundings.
