Moonlit

Moonlight is the cool counterpart to candlelight: a single source, but high, distant and silver rather than near and gold. The moonlit landscape became a signature of Romanticism, where it carried a freight of solitude, reverie and the uncanny. Caspar David Friedrich set lone figures before moonrise to make us feel the human against the infinite; the earlier Dutch master Aert van der Neer had already built a career on canals and windmills under a low silver moon. The painter's problem is desaturation — moonlight drains colour, so the picture lives in narrow bands of blue, grey and bone-white, with the moon and its reflection as the only true lights. Watch the reflection: a moon doubled on water gives the painter a second, lower light to organise the foreground around. The mood is almost always inward. A moonlit picture asks you to stand still and listen, and the silence is the subject.
