The man’s body is bare except for a cloth around his waist, and his head is crowned with thorns. The background is dark, making the figures stand out sharply. Notice how the light hits the man’s face and hands, while the shadows deepen around him. This contrast makes the scene feel dramatic. This style is called *chiaroscuro*.
