Moses Staying the Plague (?) [recto] is a 1782 ink by William Blake, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a bearded man with arms wide open, standing over four people on the ground. The people are reaching up toward him, their bodies twisted in different directions. The whole scene is drawn in loose, quick lines with some shading, giving it a sketchy, unfinished look. The artist used a lot of light strokes to show movement and emotion. The lines around the figures are jagged and uneven, which makes the scene feel dynamic and alive. Look up cross-hatching to see how artists build shading with layers of lines.
William Blake (28 November 1757 – 12 August 1827) was an English poet, painter and printmaker.
