Legacy
Daubigny's legacy rests on his role as an important precursor of Impressionism, whose plein-air practice and loose, rapid brushwork influenced the generation that followed. His floating studio on the Botin, used along the Seine and Oise from 1857, directly inspired Claude Monet to adopt his own studio boat. His house and garden at Auvers-sur-Oise became a pilgrimage site for later artists, including Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh, who painted Daubigny's garden three times in 1890 with permission of the artist's widow.
His pupils and followers included his son Karl Pierre Daubigny, Achille Oudinot, Hippolyte Camille Delpy, Albert Charpin, and Pierre Emmanuel Damoye, while António da Silva Porto and João Marques de Oliveira carried the Barbizon approach to Portugal in 1879. In 2016, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam presented the exhibition Daubigny, Monet, Van Gogh: Impressions of Landscape, assembling 63 paintings and 16 works on paper that traced his influence on the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters he shaped.
