By 1913, the piece entered the Moderne Galerie Heinrich Thannhauser in Munich, where it remained until at least 1916.
It subsequently appeared in a private German collection in 1927 before passing through the Parisian dealer Etienne Bignou and the Chester Johnson Gallery in Chicago. In February 1929, John Levy Galleries in New York sold the painting to Chester Dale. Dale bequeathed the work to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 1963, where it remains part of the permanent collection.
