Le barbier pense a ses créanciers... is a 1839 ink by Honoré Daumier, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This lithograph shows a barber about to shave a man while the man stares at the wall, deep in thought. The artist exaggerated both faces—one focused on the razor, the other lost in worry. Daumier often used humor to point out real problems, like debt, in a way people would notice. Look at the man’s worried eyes and the barber’s calm hands. The style is rough, almost like a quick sketch, but it still shows the mood perfectly. This style is called lithography. Check out more by Daumier, Honoré.
Honoré-Victorin Daumier was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker, whose many works offer commentary on the social and political life in France, from the Revolution of 1830 to the fall of the Second French Empire in 1870.
