This lithograph shows a man standing near a seated woman in a plain room. She holds a cigarette while looking up at him. The man’s face is turned away, so we only see her expression. Daumier loved to mock high society in his prints. He often drew exaggerated faces to show people’s true feelings under fancy manners. This one feels like a quick snapshot, not a polished portrait. Look up lithography next.
