About this work

You see a man holding a violin in one hand and a wine glass in the other, grinning right at you. Baburen painted people who lived on the edges—musicians, gamblers, drinkers. This guy’s broken tooth and messy clothes tell you he’s not a nobleman. The way the light hits his face makes him feel alive, like he just turned to look at you. If you like this, check out the technique called *chiaroscuro*.
