This sketch shows a strong man in a dim room, holding a hammer in one hand and an anvil in the other. His muscles are tense, and he’s wearing a loose shirt and pants. Behind him, another person stands half-hidden in the shadows, while a faint outline of a horse’s head appears in the lower left corner. The artist used bold contrasts between light and dark to make the blacksmith stand out. The rough edges and quick strokes give it a raw, urgent feel. Next, check out chiaroscuro to see how light and shadow create drama in art.
