Portrait of a Young Man, an oil on canvas painted in 1646 by Frans Hals in Haarlem, entered the collection of Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford, by 1736 and remained in the Walpole family at Houghton Hall []. The work was sold in 1779 to Russian ambassador Count Aleksei Semonovich Musin‑Pushkin, who transferred it to Catherine II for the Hermitage collection []. It remained in the Hermitage until 1931, when it passed through Count Matthiesen Gallery, P. & D. Colnaghi & Co., and M. Knoedler & Co. to Andrew W. Mellon, who bequeathed it to the National Gallery of Art in 1937 []. The painting’s creation date and provenance are documented in both the artist’s catalogue and museum records []
