History & Provenance
The painting entered the collection of Russian patron Sergei Shchukin, who purchased it directly from Matisse in Paris. Following the 1917 Russian Revolution, Shchukin’s holdings were nationalized; in 1948 the work was transferred to public ownership and assigned to the Hermitage Museum, alongside pieces from the Ivan Morozov collection.
Context
The early 1910s marked a transitional phase for Matisse, as he explored more ornamental compositions and refined his use of color. The inclusion of contemporary leisure attire, striped pajamas imported from India, reflects the period’s fashion trends and Matisse’s interest in integrating modern cultural elements into his art.
