Four Scenes from the Legends of Judas and Pilate is a 1870 ink by Georges Hurtrel, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This panel shows four small scenes carved into dark metal. In the top left, a woman kneels beside a bed, holding a child while another woman stands watching. The top right scene has a man fighting on a bridge, with bodies on the ground. The bottom left shows a man swinging a sword at a fallen figure, while the bottom right has a man and woman in a room with a bed and a dog at their feet. The dark, shadowy style makes everything look like it’s carved from one piece. The gold edges frame each scene like a stage. Next, check out the technique: cross-hatching to see how artists build depth with lines.
