Executed in oil on wooden panel, Gossaert employs a luminous gold background that enhances the figures’ presence. Fine brushwork captures delicate facial features and textile textures, reflecting the Northern Renaissance’s attention to detail. At the same time, the balanced arrangement and classical posture reveal the artist’s assimilation of Italian Renaissance compositional principles.

The painting was created in the early sixteenth century and later entered the collection of the Museo del Prado, where it remains on display. Its early documentation is limited; the original patron and precise acquisition history are not recorded, though the work has been referenced in scholarly catalogues of Gossaert’s oeuvre.

Gossaert, also known as Jan Mabuse, was a pivotal figure in bringing Italianate motifs to the Low Countries. Deësis exemplifies his synthesis of Flemish realism with the emerging humanist ideals of the Italian Renaissance, marking a transitional moment in Northern European art.
