About this work

This painting shows a busy harbor at Naples during a naval fight. Ships with billowing sails crash into each other. Smoke rises from cannons. Small figures run along the docks. The artist painted war as chaos, not glory. He hid details in the smoke, so you have to look close to see the action. This trick makes you feel the confusion of the scene. If you like how he hides action in smoke, check out Pieter Brueghel I.
