Portrait of a Halberdier is a 1529 oil painting by Pontormo. It was first painted on panel and later moved to canvas. The work is in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. A preparatory drawing of the same figure survives in Florence’s Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe. That sketch shows the man in a more frontal, less twisted pose than the final picture. It helps scholars see how Pontormo changed the composition. If you liked this, check out the J. Paul Getty Museum.
