Painted by Titian around 1541 or 1542, the work depicts a twelve-year-old Ranuccio Farnese and bears the signature "Titianvs F." Commissioned by Bishop Cornaro as a gift for the subject's mother, Gerolama Orsini, the portrait was created during Ranuccio's stay in Parma or Padua. It was the first of many portraits Titian produced for the Farnese family. The painting remained in the Farnese collections in Rome and Parma, appearing in inventories from 1644 through 1708.
In 1734, it passed by inheritance to the Bourbon collection in Naples, residing in various palaces until 1816. The work was subsequently brought to London by Sir George Donaldson, sold to Sir John Charles Robinson in 1880, and acquired by Sir Francis Cook by 1885. It remained in the Cook family until 1947, when it was sold to Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi.
The Samuel H. Kress Foundation purchased it in 1948 and gifted it to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 1952.

Its provenance traces from the Farnese family inventories in Parma to the Bourbon collection in Naples, followed by ownership by Sir George Donaldson, Sir John Charles Robinson, and the Cook family at Doughty House in Richmond.
