Christ at Emmaus: The Larger Plate
1654
From the collection of Cleveland Museum of Art
Christ at Emmaus: The Larger Plate is a 1654 by Rembrandt, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This etching shows three men sitting at a table in a dim room. The person in the center looks serious, with light streaming down on them. One man leans in close, while the other rests his arm on the table, holding a staff. The walls and floor are dark, but the light makes the faces and table stand out. Notice how the light hits only certain spots, making the scene feel dramatic. The artist used shading to create depth and focus on the faces. Check out *chiaroscuro* to see how this lighting trick works.
