Venus Lamenting Adonis is a 1610 ink by Peter Paul, Sir Rubens, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows three figures in quick, loose lines. The biggest one is a woman, her arms raised as if in grief. Two smaller figures—maybe children—stand near her, their bodies drawn with the same fast, rough strokes. The ink is dark but uneven, with some spots where the paper shows through. The artist scribbled notes in the top corner, but they’re hard to read. The drawing feels urgent, like it was made fast to capture a moment. Next, look up cross-hatching to see how artists build shading with layers of lines.
