The painting's known ownership began with Major Hugh Edward Wilbraham at Delamere House, Cheshire. It was sold at Christie's, London, in 1930 and acquired by the Amsterdam dealer Jacques Goudstikker. After Goudstikker fled in May 1940 and died en route, the work was confiscated by the Nazis and delivered to Hermann Göring's collection.

Recovered by the Allies at the end of World War II, it was restituted to the Netherlands and held by Dutch restitution authorities under inventory number NK 2347. It was displayed in the Rijksmuseum's Gallery of Honor from 1960 before being restituted to Goudstikker's heirs in 2006. In 2007 it was acquired by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., where it is accessioned as 2007.116.1. In 2008 it featured in the exhibition "Reclaimed: paintings from the collection of Jacques Goudstikker."
