The artist employed contrasting brushwork to distinguish figures: smooth, even strokes define Poland’s garments, emphasizing grace and purity, while thick, tactile impasto renders the chains as heavy and oppressive. Commissioned for the 1807 celebration following the establishment of the Duchy of Warsaw, the banner was displayed during a performance attended by Napoleon himself. After the event, it was likely stored or displayed in state institutions. Its survival through subsequent political upheavals is rare, as most such ephemeral propaganda was discarded or destroyed.

The painting emerged during a brief window of Polish optimism after Napoleon’s victories over Prussia and Russia, when the Duchy of Warsaw was formed as a French client state. Artists were encouraged to produce imagery linking Napoleon to Poland’s restoration, though this hope would fade as French demands grew and independence remained unrealized.

The banner remains a rare visual artifact of early 19th-century Polish nationalism shaped by French influence. It reflects how political allegory was used to mobilize public sentiment during a time of fragile sovereignty. Today, it serves as a historical document of how art was instrumentalized in state-building and national mythmaking.
