About this work

This engraving shows a seated man holding a coin with Albrecht Dürer’s face on it. The work copies an old portrait but adds a modern twist. It’s based on a real coin from Dürer’s time. The artist used fine lines to make soft shadows, a trick called chiaroscuro. Check out the Museum of Ethnography if you want to see it in person.
