Untitled is a 1870 paint by Unknown, a Impressionism work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This painting shows a person sitting cross-legged, holding a stringed instrument. They’re dressed in bright, bold colors—yellow pants, a blue and red patterned shirt, and a green scarf. The face is flat and stylized, with thick black hair and a mustache, while the body looks more rounded and solid. The clothes and instrument suggest this might be a musician, but the style feels more like a stylized portrait than a realistic one. The colors pop against the plain background, making the figure stand out. A watercolour and tin alloy painting on paper depicts a fashionably dressed Babu seated on a Western-style chair, playing a sitar with silver-coloured details. The figure has longish hair, a moustache, and wears Western-style pumps with buckles, while his scarf and garments feature silver highlights. The composition employs shading and rounded forms for the limbs and physique, with minimal ornamentation beyond large silver ear-rings. The work was transferred to the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Indian Section in 1879.
