About this work

Whistler’s 1857 etching shows a girl in a simple dress, standing still. Her face and hands are softly shaded in black and white. The background is almost blank, so your eyes stay on her gentle expression. Whistler made a dozen prints of Annie. He used two tools at once: an etching needle for lines and a drypoint needle for blurry edges. This mix gives the picture a soft glow. It feels quiet and close-up.
