You see a busy New York restaurant at night—red walls, a mirror behind the bar, and four people sitting close. A woman in a bright green dress lifts her glass to a man in a top hat while two others watch in the mirror. Glackens painted his own friends here, not models. The woman is Jeanne Mouquin, the owner’s wife, and the man is a wealthy playboy. The mirror lets you see both the real table and its reflection, so you feel like you’re sitting right there. Look up *impasto*—the thick, visible brushstrokes that make her dress glow.
