Saint Jerome in a Courtyard is a 1514 ink by Albrecht Altdorfer, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white engraving shows a bearded man in heavy robes kneeling beside a lion. He’s holding a rock and looks deep in thought. Behind him, a stone building with arched windows and a tower stands, while a bushy plant fills the right side. The man is Saint Jerome, a scholar known for talking to animals—here, the lion seems calm. The artist used fine lines to build up shadows and texture, like on the lion’s fur or the building’s bricks.
