About this work

This painting shows a woman in a blue robe with a golden halo around her head. She is holding a baby in her arms. The woman's face is serious, and the baby looks at the viewer with a neutral expression. The woman's robe is blue with gold accents, and the baby is wearing a white cloth. The woman's hands are visible as she holds the baby, and her right hand is placed on the baby's chest. The background of the painting is dark, which makes the woman and the baby stand out. The painting is done in tempera, a technique that allows for vivid colors and details. To learn more about the artist's use of tempera, look up Andrea Mantegna.
