Landscape with the Pilgrim at Prayer is a 1740 ink by Canaletto, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white scene shows a rocky shore with a lone figure praying by a small boat. Behind them, a wavy sea crashes against jagged cliffs, where a few distant ships and buildings cling to the edge. The waves are drawn with quick, choppy lines, while the shore looks rough and uneven. The artist used a method called etching to create these fine details. The texture of the water and rocks feels almost tactile, like you could run your finger over the lines. Check out etching to see how artists like Canaletto made prints this precise.
Giovanni Antonio Canal (18 October 1697 – 19 April 1768), commonly known as Canaletto (Italian: ), was an Italian painter from the Republic of Venice, considered an important member of the 18th-century Venetian school.
