Landscape with the Pilgrim at Prayer [upper left] is a 1740 ink by Canaletto, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This scene shows a rocky shore with a small group of people near the water. One person stands praying, hands clasped, while others sit or walk nearby. In the background, a large ship sails past a tall, layered tower on a hill, with more buildings scattered around. The wavy lines in the water and sky create a sense of movement, almost like the whole scene is alive. The artist used a technique that lets ink build up in layers, making some areas darker than others. Next, look up etching to see how this method works.
Giovanni Antonio Canal (18 October 1697 – 19 April 1768), commonly known as Canaletto (Italian: ), was an Italian painter from the Republic of Venice, considered an important member of the 18th-century Venetian school.
